Sikkens Foundation designs win European Design Awards
At the European Design Awards that were recently held in Porto two designs of the Sikkens Foundation were awarded: the invitation for the Sikkens Prize 2017 and the publication The embedded nomad. The European Design Awards are presented to European designers for outstanding work in the communication design field.
Both designs were made by graphic designer Thijs Verbeek, who collected four awards, of which two for other projects. For the invitation he received silver in the category Cards & Flyers and for the publication silver in the category Book Layout.
Invitation Sikkens Prize 2017
The invitation was made for the Award ceremony of the Sikkens Prize to designer Hella Jongerius and the Mondrian Lecture which was held by Narayan Khandekar on March 26th 2017 in De Doelen in Rotterdam. Verbeek designed test sheets that consist of diverse color tests and typography in various combinations. The invititation shows the process of designing, without becoming ‘completed’. Verbeek: “By approaching the design as an open research, it offered me the possibility to discover the boundaries of legibility, contrast and aesthetics.”
Publication The embedded nomad. David Chipperfield
The laudation for the awarding of the Sikkens Prize (2015) to architect David Chipperfield has been published as a book with a foreword by Dingeman Kuilman. The embedded nomad describes Chipperfield’s unique approach and his practice – David Chipperfield Architects (DCA) – through examinations of works like the renovation of Berlin’s Neues Museum. The text is accompanied by images of Chipperfield’s buildings. Verbeek positioned each image within the context of its location, color or history; principles which are important in the work of David Chipperfield.
The Embedded Nomad is available in bookstores and webshops like Idea Books.
