Anniversary film … celebrating the Sikkens Foundation’s 50th birthday
In 2022, the Sikkens Foundation proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary. On this special occasion, filmmaker Gerrit Schreurs has come up with a film dedicated to its rich history, in which several former winners of the Sikkens Prize address the foundation.
Several winners of the Sikkens Prize look back at the former prize winners, philosophising about colour and how it can be used, shedding light on their profession.
The great diversity of prize winners is an interesting element. The prize has been awarded not only to renowned architects and artists (e.g. Gerrit Rietveld, Le Curbosier) but also to engineers, visual artists and even a poet, film director, musician and NASA scientist.
The real outsiders among the prize winners were the hippies because of their colourful contribution to society and HEMA, for using cheerful colours in products and shop fittings.
The prize winners in turn praise the jury members of the Sikkens Prize for their broad scope and courage to nominate young artists as well.
The Sikkens Foundation (1972) is an independent foundation supported by AkzoNobel at a financial level. With publications, lectures and the Sikkens Prize award, the foundation contributes to the awareness and understanding of how colour impacts society in general.
