Performance by Eef van Breen Group and Envisions
Awarding the Sikkens Prize to Hella Jongerius has inspired a very special collaboration between multidisciplinary musicians the Eef van Breen Group and young design collective Envisions. Their performance will precede the awarding of the Sikkens Prize to Hella Jongerius on Sunday 26th March in De Doelen in Rotterdam.
In ‘A Tribute to Hella Jongerius’, the two groups reflect on Jongerius’ work and her use of colour by creating a mesmerizing opening performance in which sound, light, colour and sculpture come together in a spectacle for the senses, while simultaneously setting the stage for the rest of the programme.
Eef van Breen Group
Eef van Breen is many things. To name a few, he’s a trumpeter, a singer, a composer and an initiator. He tells stories through music, creating multidisciplinary compositions from different areas of expertise, often collaborating with artists from different backgrounds. His own Eef van Breen Group is his main platform. Van Breen has written for theatre productions with the Noord Nederlands Toneel and Toneelgroep Amsterdam, a fanfare for Crescendo Nieuwveen, chamber music pieces for Duo Billitis and a Klingon Opera by Floris Schönfelt. Touring throughout the Netherlands, the Eef van Breen Group can be found in bars, concert halls, theatres and even out in the fields.
Driven by the idea that ‘experimentation is the key to innovation’, Dutch designer collective Envisions showcases everything but the final product. Lead by Simone Post and Sanne Schuurman, Envisions’ research focuses primarily on colour, material and technique. The collective aims to deconstruct and disrupt, reverse and reinvent: to shake up the status quo by exploring previously undiscovered paths in the process. By revealing the steps of the extensive research process that precedes a design’s final outcome, their collections – which have previously been shown at Salone del Mobile, Dutch Design Week and NYCxDESIGN – breathe life into initial concepts and pushes them towards reality.
